Historical Description

This charming and delicate Pablo Picasso ceramic Chouetton (Young Wood Owl), 1952 inhabits all the qualities unique to Picasso's limited œuvre of ceramic works. Known for his series of owl ceramics, Picasso sets this work apart from the rest with its simplistic, expressive qualities. The owls are rendered with white bodies, and a combination of black, brown and detailed white feathers. The wings are curled into the sides of the body, resting, while the owl perches. With two faces on either side, one could say the contrasting personalities of the owl are shown. On one side the furrowed brows and harsh lines of the beak and eyes present the look of disdain, while on the other side the softened brows and down turned eyes denote a measured understanding and shyness. With whimsical, oxide decoration, Picasso incorporates traditional features of a vase and pitcher to create the owl's abstracted form - a technique that Picasso has mastered. This is a truly stunning work best admired and appreciated in person so one can see both faces of the owl, observing its features from all sides.

Created in 1952, this turned vase of white earthenware clay with decoration in oxides (brown, black) is knife engraved on white enamel. From the edition of 500, this work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the underside, along with ink inscription 'EDITION PICASSO'.
