Historical Description

In our Pablo Picasso ceramic Tete de chevre de profil (Goat's Head in Profile), 1952 A.R. 148 Picasso uses geometric lines and shapes to depict the side profile of a goat. The goat’s profile is surrounded by a saturated yellow border and decorated with colorful large blue dots. The lines along the horns form ridges, adding texture to the piece and render the goat horns more realistically. The dots and other embellishments on Picasso ceramic Goat's Head in Profile, 1952 A.R. 148 provide whimsical accents to the plate. This charming bucolic profile demonstrates Picasso’s lighthearted approach to color and ceramics.

The shape of the oblong plate allows for a landscape or portrait subject to be portrayed. Picasso shows his mastery of the ceramic medium by matching his subjects to the forms, and he has done so in Goat's head in Profile, 1952 A.R. 148. The oblong plate in landscape view is perfect for the head of a goat which extends more horizontally than vertically. Picasso also uses the natural lip of the plate as a border for his subject, and the vibrant yellow brings attention to the artistic masterpiece.

Created in 1952, this oblong plate was created with white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes (yellow, blue, green, red-ochrous patina) under partial brushed glaze. From the edition of 100, this work is stamped 'Madoura Plein Feu' and 'Empreinte Originale de Picasso' on the reverse side of the work.
