Pablo Picasso Bull's Profile, 1956
Utilizing clean-cut lines and a strong color contrast of dark brown and teal-green against white, Picasso depicts the profile of a bull. Adding a sense of texture to the piece, the raised lines suggest the feel of the bull's fur and horns. These dark lines contrast sharply against the white background, causing the image of the bull to stand out to the viewer. The bull appears as a strong and imposing figure yet expresses such tenderness that we cannot help but feel a connection with this majestic yet intimidating creature.
Created in 1956, this convex wall plaque of white earthenware clay with engraving accentuated with oxidized paraffin (ivory, brown, green) and glaze bath is from the edition of 450. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
