Pablo Picasso Bull and Picador, 1956

Exhibiting his love of experimenting with various art media, this piece is rendered with strong contrast and lyrical figurative elements. Set against a brilliantly glazed white background, the Picador on horseback evokes a sense of quiet solitude that is best experienced in person. Rather than conveying an animated battle scene, Picasso here chooses to convey the bull and picador on separate sides of the pitcher, each standing quietly and calmly on their own.

Created in 1956, this original turned pitcher of white earthenware clay with oxidized paraffin decoration (black) and white enamel is from the edition of 500.This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the bottom.
