Picasso showcases his mastery of painting on ceramics as he drafts a simple face with a curious and quizzical expression on Pablo Picasso ceramic "Black Face" Service, Plate D, 1948. Set against a dark, black glaze and shiny background, the brilliant white, red, and green hues seem to leap from the plate, as they contrast nicely throughout. The charming, rosy-cheeked faun appears with a sly smile in a gesture of flirtation and fun. The sharper edges of the mouth, nose, and eyes contribute to this effect - making the faun appear sly with eyes creased. The face of the faun is crafted with the use of very simple lines - but the ears, horns, and facial features are still clear to the viewer. Picasso is a master of making simple compositions beam with life.

Picasso works with the shape of the plate - the white outline of the fauns face falls within the bottom dip of the plate and the ears and horns rise up onto the lip. There is some decoration on the lip as well - a common feature of Picasso ceramics.

Created in 1948, this plate of white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes (red, green, white, bright black ground) is knife engraved under glaze. From the edition of 100, this work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'D'APRES PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse along with the handwritten inscription: 'D' and 'EDITION PICASSO'.
