Pablo Picasso Bird with Tuft, 1952

From a series of six works, this ceramic is set on a brilliantly glazed white background upon which rests the dark form of a bird nestled in the concave dip of the bowl. The bird appears mostly as a silhouette except for his big eyes, which stare out at the viewer. A subtle tint of light aquamarine highlights the bird's form. The bird, though simply depicted, adopts a personality of his own, and the viewer gets the impression that this bird is keeping a very watchful eye on his surroundings.

Created in 1952, this turned round ash-tray of white earthenware clay with oxidized paraffin decoration is part of a series of six works. From the edition of 500, this ceramic features the inscribed stamps: 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' on verso.
