Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Bird on a Branch, 1952

From a series of six works, this ceramic is set on a brilliantly glazed white background upon which rests the dark form of a bird sitting on tree branch bending over to eat a flower. Nestled in the concave dip of the bowl, the bird appears mostly as a silhouette except for his body, which seems to glean in the space left by the absence of black. With a tree that stretches up around the side of the ceramic this work is one of the more background orientated in the series. The bird, though simply depicted, adopts a personality of his own, and the viewer gets the impression that this bird is enjoying his surroundings.

Created in 1952, this turned round ash-tray of white earthenware clay with oxidized paraffin decoration is part of a series of six works. From the edition of 500, this ceramic features the inscribed stamps: 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' on verso.
