Pablo Picasso Bird, 1955

One can see why Picasso so often returned to the subject of birds in this stunning piece. We find this small yet powerful bird in a warm, richly detailed surrounding, its profile strengthened with full feathers and a sharp expressive beak. Picasso manages to convey these aspects by utilizing only the dimensional surface of ceramic. The cupel iself is stylized to match the treatment of Ancient Greek bowls with black vases, which infuse this artwork with a sense of grand history and prestige.

Created in 1955, this round cupel of red earthenware clay with black enamel on the underside (red, bronze-coloured black) is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
