Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Trois Personnages sur Tremplin (Three Figures on a Trampoline), 1956 A.R. 375 is a delightfully simple composition that is nevertheless remarkably visually balanced and rich in narrative. Three figures, suggested skillfully through just a few strong lines, stand on a trampoline. Each one holds a different pose, as if at different stages of leaping into the air. On the left, a figure prepares to jump, strength harnessed in quick parallel lines of body and legs. In the middle, a figure bristles with movement and energy, as if resonating with the vibration of a fresh jump. The figure on the right stretches easily up in the air, reaching up to the sky; the bold strokes of the two arms on the upper right dynamically echo the two legs of the trampoline on the lower left. The image is filled with fluid energy, the economy of line highlighting the sense of action and movement. Picasso is renowned for his mastery of virtually every medium he took interest in, and his Madoura ceramics wonderfully exemplify his skill. This visually rhythmic piece is as playful as it is beautiful, the decadent dark engravings standing out against an exquisite ivory background.

Created in 1956, this Madoura small convex wall plaque of white earthenware clay with engraving accentuated with oxidized paraffin in a glaze bath (ivory, brown) is from the edition of 500. This work is stamped with the ‘MADOURA PLEIN FEU’ and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO’ pottery stamps on the verso.
