Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Sujet poisson (Fish Subject), 1952 exhibits a creatively unique likeness to the fish from which it was inspired.  This animated caricature comes to life in this decorative, hand-made pitcher. Brightly lit eyes, a grinning smile, and fluttering fins are all features of Pablo Picasso Sujet poisson (Fish Subject), 1952 that refuse to go unnoticed.  The decorative engobe detail enliven this ceramic pitcher, giving it a whimsical energy and a humorous likeness to a real fish.  The fluted shape of the pitcher echoes that of a fish, as the spout narrows to form the nose, the opening fanning outward to form the tail.  The handle creates the perfect dorsal fin for this character, making it a charming addition to any collection.

Created in 1952, this turned pitcher was produced at the Madoura Pottery Workshop located in Southern France.  It is both inscribed and stamped on the underside of the base, indicating the ‘Edition Picasso’ from which this piece derives.
