Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Tête de Femme (Head of a Woman), 1962 is an exquisite offering from the multitalented artist. Showcasing his master of the linocut or linoleum cut medium, Picasso used a single block to create this exciting Cubist rendering of Jacqueline Roque. This process is now known as “reduction”, in which the artist gradually cuts away from a linoleum block to create a multicolored impression. Choosing warm neutral colors of brown, beige, and black for his palette, Picasso Tête de Femme (Head of a Woman), 1962 is formed from shapes of flat, opaque color and curvilinear lines. The composition features a hidden triple portrait, displaying a frontal depiction of a woman’s head, with each side of her face also representing the left and right profiles of the same subject.

Created in 1962, this color linocut on Arches paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right. A very important proof gifted to Picasso's Linoleum printer Arnera. Noted as such in the catalogue and dedicated and signed in the backside to Arnera. The numbered edition was 50; published by Louise Leiris, Paris and printed by Arnéra, Vallauris.
