Historical Description

Beautifully balanced and gracefully conveyed, Pablo Picasso Flute Player and Goat, 1956 relays a sense of primal joy. A seated flute player passionately plays his instrument as a goat dances wildly beside him. Picasso hints at an entire scene through the use of minimal lines, depicting only the basic silhouettes of his subjects. The goat in particular adds an element of intrigue. Standing upon two hind legs, he appears nearly human as he becomes enraptured with the music. The raised brown lines add an element of depth to this work while the shimmering glaze captures the light, providing a textural contrast between the subjects and the background.

Created in 1956, this convex wall plaque of white earthenware clay with engraving accentuated with oxidized paraffin decoration in a glaze bath is from the edition of 450. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
