Historical Description

This striking example of a bullfight depicts a colorful scene in which the picador and bull are captured frozen in a moment of pure energy. The mastery with which Picasso utilizes every inch of the medium is evident as the hollow center of the bowl becomes the pit of the bullfighting ring, and the bowl the arena as the crowd surrounds the scene on the outer edge looking on in anticipation.

Created in 1950, this white earthenware clay hollow round dish with decoration in engobes under the glaze in six colors (yellow, green, blue, russet, brown, ivory) is from the edition of 50. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
