Historical Description

Endlessly fascinated with the human face, Picasso created a range of ceramics that address this subject. Here we witness one of Picasso's more charming examples, as a smiling figure closes his eyes and passionately plays his diaulos. Picasso defines his subject with recessed lines and specks of white and blue coloration, placed against a glossy, yellow background. Deceptively simple, this work conveys a clear sense of expression with minimal detail, exemplifying Picasso's immense skill at depicting more with less.

Created in 1947, this white earthenware clay rectangular dish is decorated in engobes (yellow, green, white, brown) under yellow glaze. This piece is numbered from the edition of 200 on verso. It is annotated on the reverse 'EDITION PICASSO | MADOURA.' This work also features the inscribed stamps: 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU and 'EDITION PICASSO' on verso.
