Historical Description

Mr. Brainwash Chaplin, 2020; Executed in the famed style of the famous graffiti artist Banksy, this composition fuses historic pop images with present day icons. Mr. Brainwash, a pseudonym for French artist Thierry Guetta, pairs a revered figure with a celebrated saying, juxtaposing the confusion of modern culture with a simple, straightforward answer. The brilliantly multicolored graffiti background, with its jumble of images, provides a bold counterpoint to the simplicity of the central figure. Incorporated into the background are references to Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Roy Lichtenstein, three prolific figures fundamental to the 20th century pop-art movement. The use of Warhol’s renowned Campbell’s soup cans, Haring’s universally recognized cartoon-like figures, and Lichtenstein’s famed capitalized words creates a remarkable pop-graffiti hybrid. This compilation of historic and contemporary references creates an intriguing view of society that simultaneously entertains and mesmerizes viewers while encouraging them to explore the hidden messages in the work.

Created in 2020, this silkscreen and mixed media on paper is hand signed by Mr. Brainwash (Garges-lès-Gonesse 1966 -) in ink in the middle left. This is a unique and original work.
