Chagall L’Artiste au Chevalet (The Artist at the Easel), 1972 is an unique work which showcases the artist’s wonderful skills with watercolor. Chagall is a master with watercolor, sometimes even enhancing his printed work with the versatile medium. Watercolor is an excellent choice for Chagall, whose works often evoke an ethereal quality through their flowing color. In every way, watercolor enhances the gentle dissolution of form that Chagall’s works evoke. This dreamy quality is definitely apparent in this watercolor drawing.
In the center of the image sits a curly haired man whose soft hair is enhanced by the gentle shading around his face. Chagall also carefully illustrates the man’s eyes and his pointed nose. The artist appears to stare inquisitively at the blank canvas before him, perhaps contemplating his next artistic creation. Though his hands are imperceptible, he appears to be holding a large easel. Thin lines deriving from the easel daintily illustrate the appearance of paintbrushes. The blank canvas presents wonderful opportunities of creativity and expression; it is also a poignant symbol of artistic expression. We can easily imagine Chagall looking just as contemplative before each painting. Above him, the sun, colored yellow and green, becomes a focal point of the image. The subject bears an endearing resemblance to the curly-haired Chagall. Moreover, the scene is covered with varying shades of brown, projecting a painterly quality through the watercolor medium.
Created in 1972, this unique hand-colored watercolor with pen and ink on paper is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right. A unique work.
