Historical Description

Marc Chagall Untitled, c.1955-1963, depicts a horse made of blown glass with macce décor. Slightly iridescent and multi-colored in tone, Chagall evokes an acute sense of nature and fantasy. One can see small spots—“macette”—speckled over the body of the horse. Irregular in size, the spots travel all over the horse’s body, from the neck down, to its hind legs. They change in tone, from creamy purple to cerulean blue, guiding the wandering eye from one point to another. Known for confronting color against color, Chagall uses both the purple and blue spots to provide a contrasting effect. Although the contrast gives depth upon view of the sculpture, he succeeds in streamlining texture and color. The volume of this sculpture is petite and its smooth design allows the audience to easily navigate from the nape all the way down to the legs. The iridescence of the reds, blues, purples, and greens reflecting off each other gives a lively impression that only Chagall can craft.

Because imagination is consistent throughout Chagall’s works, his art captivates many lives. This chemistry is evident by the usage of light and transparency. However, the real beauty of this glass sculpture lies within the synthesis of ethereality and originality.

Created c.1955-1963, in the Fucina degli Angeli in Italy, this Pablo Picasso Murano colored glass sculpture was realized by master glass artist Egidio Costantini (Brindisi, 1912- Venice, 1998) in collaboration with Marc Chagall, (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985). This work is inscribed on the underside ‘M. Chagall Fucina Angeli,’ and ‘E. Costantini- VE PA’. This work is an artist proof from an unknown edition size.
