Historical Description

Taking much inspiration from the lively characters of the circus, Chagall creates The Blue Pirouette out of the sheer energy and excitement that emanates from such an animated and entertaining spectacle.

Created in November, 1966, this piece was numbered in roman numerals out of the edition of 25 in pencil in the lower left margin. It was printed on Japon paper and published by Charles Sorlier. It is also hand-signed by Marc Chagall (1887-1985) in pencil in the lower right margin.

Brilliant blues and greens create a swirling, whimsical energy that radiates throughout this work. As one of Chagall's more joyous circus scenes, clowns, performers, and dancers seem to be pirouetting their way across the frame. The elaborate shading accented by bursts of orange and red allow the characters to almost pirouette their way into our space, allowing us to experience the fun energy of the circus performance.
