An allegory of maternal love, Chagall Noémie et ses Belles-Filles (Naomi and her Daughters-in-Law), Drawings from the Bible Series, 1960 are exemplary of the artist’s thoughtful and touching imagery of the Bible narratives. Centrally displayed, Ruth and Orphan encompass their mother with loving support, the women’s resilience fortified by their internal bond. The sun stands apart in the corner, rendered in a fiery red. Umber hues set the tender tone of the work, demonstrating Marc Chagall’s brilliance as a colorist in both external beauty and internal expression.
