Historical Description

The mimosa is a popular flowering tree along the Côte d'Azur, with the unusual feature of being extremely sensitive to external factors. In response to stimulus, its petals visibly open and close. In this piece, Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) utilizes vibrant hues of yellow and green to depict the bouquet of mimosas, whose petals and leaves reach out in all directions. To the left of the bouquet, a couple embraces and appears as if floating. The city beneath them is delineated with soft, loose lines that add a sense of delicacy to the piece. The entire work relays a dreamlike quality, as two lovers, surrounded by beautiful flowers, appear to escape reality, rising above the worries of everyday life.

Created in 1968, this original color lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Annotated epreuve d'artiste XII/XXV in pencil in the lower left margin (aside from the edition of 50).
