Historical Description

Marc Chagall Le Peintre et son Double (The Painter and his Double), 1981 is a charming work with an ethereal quality from the final years of the artist’s career. Chagall renders a painter on the right side of the work illustrating a bouquet, a staple image in much of the artist’s work. An idyllic and whimsical Parisian scene takes place before him: a dancing girl, a couple in the sky, a white sheep, a flying fish, and a winged cellist dances about the composition. Each of the figures depicted make appearances in the artist’s previous works. As such, the painter depicted in the work is likely a representation of Chagall himself, and the work may be interpreted as a characterization of how he viewed Paris, his ultimate inspiration.

Created in 1981, this original color lithograph on Arches wove paper is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and is numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
