A graceful woman dances atop a goat in Marc Chagall Femme de Cirque (Circus Woman), 1960. She holds her hands above her head crossed delicately at the wrists and looks downward towards her balancing feet. She is firm and steady with strong thighs – it does not faze her that she balances on the back of an animal. Behind her is a vision of beautiful colors in shades of pink, intense red, and lilac. The ground is full of cooler tones of blue, green, and yellow to contrast the warm sky. She is luminescent, glowing brightly against the red background. The vivid colors leads us into a dreamy and romantic atmosphere, out of the realm of reality and into the fantastical. Marc Chagall is an expert at using colors to indicate fantasy. The delicate flowers in the foreground and the garland around the animal make us think of a grove untouched by people, and only populated by the luxurious woman in tandem with nature.
Created in 1960, this color lithograph with pochoir on Arches wove paper is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin; also signed in the plate lower right. Numbered from the edition of 150 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Guy Spitzer, Paris and containing the Guy Spitzer, Paris blindstamp in the image lower right.
