Historical Description

Displaying a large colorful bouquet on the left and a plentiful basket of ripe fruit on the right, Marc Chagall Corbeille de fruits et ananas (Basket of Fruit and Pineapples), 1964 conveys a sense of warmth and plentitude that traditionally characterizes the months of spring and summer. However, this work was executed in the month of November; therefore, this work could be interpreted as the artist's day dream of the coming summer months. Chagall adeptly inspires a sense of relaxation with the loose handling of color and form, animating the image for the viewer. This image conveys a sense of warmth, love and tranquility and ease. This work displays Chagall's expressive definition of form and volume as well as his adept understanding of color.

Created in November of 1964, this work is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and annotated 'epreuve d'artiste' (artist's proof) in pencil in the lower left margin.
