Historical Description

In this evocative depiction of Adam, Eve and the Serpent, Chagall reminisces upon one of his favorite subjects from the Old Testament. We watch as the feminine Eve naively accepts Adam's offering, and in this moment it is understood how she could give into temptation. Shining in ivory against the lush greenery of paradise, they emanate innocence before committing the first sin, and radiate compassion so strong that it triumphs over the slithering snake that separates them. Despite the presence of vibrantly colored flora and fauna that dance around the couple, adding to the feeling of paradise in the Eden, we find ourselves entranced by the crimson apple and Chagall's hypnotic portrayal of Adam and Eve's mutual adoration. The simple boarder that Chagall has created around the scene serves to create a snapshot of this moment in time.

Created in 1977, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin, and annotated 'epreuve d'artiste' (artist's proof) in pencil in the lower left margin.
