Historical Description

Marc Chagall Bouquet, 1966 is captivating and rare, significant for its historical importance and gorgeous coloration. In the same year as the creation of this extraordinary artwork, Chagall finished his monumental and memorable panels for the Metropolitan Opera in the Lincoln Center, the Source of Music and the Triumph of Music, and we estimate that this artwork was created during his visit to New York City in September 1966 for the unveiling of these commissions. The setting of this artwork holds symbolic and sentimental meaning. Chagall was a former resident of New York, having lived in Midtown East Manhattan as well as High Falls in the Hudson Valley area of the state.

The focus of this stunning gouache is undeniable, the ever symbolic and flourishing bouquet. This beautiful and distinct flower is prominent in the Hudson Valley.  In this rendition, Chagall’s virtuosity of coloration is expounding as he places the floral arrangement against the New York City skyline. The violet flora  are featured in the foreground, centered in the composition. Towering over the cityscape, the purple flower has tall stems with blossoms that taper towards a bright blue sky, surrounded by the lush and leafy foliage. The lower third of the composition showcases the straight and staggered lines of the Manhattan architecture fading into the distance in pastel hues. Positioned at the right center edge, is a floating couple painted in the same cool violets and blues as the efflorescent bouquet.

Created in 1966, this unique original gouache, pastel, and color crayons on heavy Japanese paper is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in Indian ink in the lower right.
