Karel Appel Untitled, 1969 would be an exceptionally joyful and engaging work to live with. Its brilliant fields of blue, pink, purple, green, and turquoise immediately bring energy and warmth into a room, while the strong black contours give the composition a bold graphic presence. The central figure is unmistakably Appel—part human, part creature, and entirely animated by the artist’s imagination. Its enormous eyes and wonderfully eccentric profile give it a personality that feels humorous, curious, and strangely endearing. From across a room, the painting has tremendous visual impact because of its saturated color and powerful silhouette; up close, the irregular edges, visible brushwork, and spontaneous shifts of color reveal the physical pleasure of Appel’s painting process. It is the kind of artwork that can change the atmosphere of an entire room, introducing color and personality without losing sophistication. Whether surrounded by contemporary furnishings or placed unexpectedly within a traditional interior, this is a work that would be difficult to pass without looking at it—and even more difficult to look at without smiling. Its exuberance, humor, and extraordinary sense of freedom make it a painting that could continue to give its owner pleasure every day.
Imagine living with this remarkable Karel Appel every day. From the moment you enter the room, its brilliant blues, electric pink, rich purple, and fresh greens immediately enliven the space, while Appel’s wonderfully eccentric figure seems to greet you with a personality all its own. There is something irresistibly joyful about the painting—bold without being intimidating, sophisticated without taking itself too seriously, and filled with the uninhibited creative freedom for which Appel is celebrated. In morning light the colors can feel fresh and exuberant; in the evening, the strong black contours and saturated fields of color give the work a deeper, more dramatic presence. It is easy to imagine this painting becoming more than something hanging on the wall: it becomes a familiar character within the home, a work you notice differently from day to day and one that inevitably attracts the attention of guests. This is the kind of artwork that can transform the feeling of a room, bringing with it humor, optimism, imagination, and an unmistakable sense of life—and making the experience of owning an important work of art genuinely fun.
Karel Appel (1921–2006) was one of the most important Dutch artists of the postwar period and a co-founder of the influential CoBrA movement, established in 1948. CoBrA artists rejected many conventional rules of painting in favor of spontaneity, experimentation, imagination, and expressive freedom, with children's drawings and fantasy creatures among their important sources of inspiration. Museum Cobra Appel developed an unmistakable visual language populated by wildly expressive human figures, animals, faces, and imaginary creatures rendered through powerful gestures and intense, often unmixed color. Although his paintings can possess the apparent spontaneity and directness of a child's drawing, their simplicity is deceptive: Appel developed a sophisticated relationship between gesture, material, color, and form over the course of a long international career. The Cobra Museum notes that from around 1954 onward, Appel's interaction with paint itself became increasingly important, with more substantial applications of pigment and larger expressive gestures. Museum Cobra His uncompromising approach to painting helped make him one of the defining figures of European postwar art, and his work remains immediately recognizable for its combination of raw energy, imagination, color, and emotional directness.
About the Work:
Created in 1969, Karel Appel's Untitled is an acrylic on paper mounted on canvas, signed and dated “appel 69” in the lower right. The work presents one of Appel's wonderfully enigmatic figures through expansive areas of brilliant color and heavy black contours. A vivid blue body dominates the composition, while passages of pink, purple, green, and deeper blue surround and intersect the figure. Oversized circular eyes and the exaggerated profile transform the subject into something simultaneously human, animalistic, humorous, and fantastical. Rather than describing a conventional portrait, Appel allows color and gesture to create the personality of the figure. The work belongs to a particularly interesting period in Appel's career; other documented works from 1969 similarly employ acrylic on paper mounted or laid on canvas, including examples recorded by Christie's. Christie's The result here is a wonderfully immediate painting in which Appel's celebrated freedom of expression is balanced by an unexpectedly sophisticated arrangement of color and form.
