Historical Description

Joan Miró Ubu Roi (King Ubu ) from Suites por Ubu Roi, 1966; Joan Miró uses his wonderful talent with abstraction and lively line work to bring Miró Ubu Roi (King Ubu) from Suites por Ubu Roi, 1966 to life. Multicolored characters buzz around on a stunning pink background. Through the abstracted color block shapes, quizzical faces and figures appear. A winged figure hovers in the sky above another land-bound figure with a piercing yellow eye. The myriad of colors brings the playful creatures to life. Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry is a comical parody of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and that comical energy comes through strongly in Miró’s playful illustration of a scene. Ubu Roi has been hailed as a form of Surrealism, and there is no one better to tackle the illustration of Surrealist thought that Joan Miró.

Created in 1966, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin and  numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Teriade, Paris; printed by Mourlot, Paris.
