Historical Description

Joan Miró The Egyptian, 1977 is an inventive and quizzical work, which combines Miró’s exquisite use of color and bold black sections with his whimsical subjects. A brilliant blue triangle sits atop the head of the Egyptian woman, bringing a bright burst of color to the foreground. Two vivid red ovals pierce the block of black. Upon closer inspection, one can see that Miró has added hints of gold and green to the black, as well as patterns typical of Miró’s style are visible on the upper portion of the head. Hazy spots of purple, green, and gold also stand out around the woman, highlighting her periphery and marking this work in Miró’s hand. To the left of her head flutters an enigmatic bird created through blocked shapes. Miró ties the bird and the woman together by creating them from the same materials and colors. The bird displays the same black with hints of gold and green that the woman does. The pointed stare of the bird adds whimsy to the canvas.

Created in 1977, this color etching and aquatint with cut out shapes is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin. Published by Maeght, Paris and printed by Morsang, Paris.
