Historical Description

Textured black lines snake throughout the composition of Poemes Civils, instilling this piece with an inherent sense of animation and expression. With the use of deceptively simple black lines, Miró creates a complex composition that guides our eye left and right, up and down, and across the page. Miró encourages us to find meaning within these seemingly arbitrary lines, whose trajectory is interrupted only by a single circle of soft aqua to the left. The beauty of this delightful, modern work is that each viewer sees something different, allowing for a myriad of different interpretations.

Created in 1961, this etching and aquatint was the cover to the book Poemes Civils by Joan Brossa. This original print is hand signed Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 90 in pencil in the lower left. This piece is printed by Maeght, Levallois and published by Editorial RM, Barcelona.
