Historical Description

Joan Miró Plate III from Le lézard aux plumes d’or (The Lizard with Golden Feathers), 1971 is a characteristically abstracted and brightly colored lithograph. This lithograph was to be part of a book illustrating a poem by Miró himself, showing off his twin talents of writing and artmaking. Popping out from a speckled grey background are bold shapes rendered in stark black, as well as vibrant and saturated blue, yellow, green, and red. There is little to no shift in these colors, and they appear as thick blocks. Miró uses thinner and more delicate lines to create details around the larger shapes. Though they are abstract, the viewer can make what they will out of the composition – eyes seem to appear out of concentric circles, and red triangles bite like teeth from black jowls. Miró has the distinct ability to create brilliantly colored works that tease the mind into seeing and not seeing at the same time.

Created in 1971, this color lithograph is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the image lower right, and numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil in the image lower left. Printed by Mourlot, Paris; published by Louis Broder, Paris.
