Historical Description

Joan Miro Plate III, from Album 19, 1961 is a collaborative work between Miro and Raymond Queneau. The Album consists of 19 lithographs with 7 lithographs by Miro which were designed to illustrate the hand-written preface by Quenaeu. A sweeping black abstract organic figure sits at the center of the composition, bold varying line weights carried across the page with purpose. Sections of the form have been blocked in with black, the haphazard coloring leaving spots of negative space between the translucent ink spots. The anomalous figure, though imposing, is not without the levity of color as a range of muted hues blot out other sections of the figure, giving the work a breath of life. The color paint dripped and splattered across the page, oceans of blue, orange, green, and yellow mixed in a sea of black and beige. Going in with his ink, Miro adds pointed triangles in the shape of teeth to the top of the form on the top left side and adds circles with lines around the sheet, mimicking the highly expressive work’s energy.

Created in 1961, this color lithograph rhodoid on Rives paper is hand signed in pencil by Joan Miro (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in the lower right corner. Printed and published by Maeght, Paris, this work is numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left. There are also fifteen artist proofs reserved for the artist and the collaborators.
