Historical Description

Joan Miró Plate 9 from Album 21, 1978 exhibits an exquisite use of color and texture to create a lively image. The focus is a large figure that takes up the center of the composition. It has wide eyes surrounded with red circles – this is mirrored in the hands which are composed of red dots surrounded by black circles. The figure also has hair or whiskers coming out of the sides of its head. It is a playful lithograph bursting with color around the edges with swirling yellow and orange, and textured clouds of red and blue.

Created in 1978, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right. Created in 1978 this work was one of twenty one illustrations Miró executed for Carlos Franqui’s collection of poetry entitled Album 21. Numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left, aside from the edition of 15 artist’s proofs, Miró Plate 9 from Album 21, 1978 is published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris and printed by Mourlot, Paris.
