Historical Description

Playfully titled “Comet Bird”, Miró capitalizes on the theme of flight and escape. Bold, black strokes outline the subtle form of a bird. The bird’s head is whimsically depicted with a dash of red and a cobalt blue beak. Slightly positioned above, two thick, painterly strokes convey its wings. Using color and form, Miro pictures a bird in flight, soaring above the stars and planets.

Created in 1951, this color lithograph on Pur Fil du Marais wove paper is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right right. Inscribed ‘epreuve d’artiste’ (artist’s proof) in pencil in the lower left; aside from the numbered edition of 75; published by Maeght, Paris.
