Historical Description

Joan Miró Les Voyants (The Seers) Pl. 6, 1970  is a richly colored world, both bizarre and enthralling, undulating with primordial forms and dominating black lines.  The name of the piece itself suggests something magical, and the colorful bold forms take on the mysticism of forgotten worlds. A caterpillar-like form curves around the top part of the piece, its feverish red eye staring out at the viewer. The curve of the caterpillar’s right side continues in a supple and beautiful wave across the middle of the piece, melting into the form of the fantastic creature at the bottom left. The thick black lines make dancing brackets around the corners of the piece, leading the viewer’s eye on a mesmerizing spiral around the transcendental special plane. Two bold handprints, very likely Miró’s own, placed dynamically across from each other fill the piece with the raw energy of cave paintings. Miró’s signature asterisks, peppered through the image, are here both human marks and abstract celestial bodies. The background is a rich sky of splattered colors in which the various forms and lines thrive, dominating the entire pictorial space in this riveting and visually resounding piece.

Created in 1970, this color lithograph is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil on the lower right and inscribed ‘E.A.’ (epreuve d’artiste – artist proof) in pencil  in the lower left, aside from numbered edition of 75. Published by Broder, Paris. Printed by Mourlot, Paris
