Historical Description

Joan Miró Les Grandes Manœuvres (The Great Maneuvers), 1973 showcases the artist’s linear style of Automatism-a method which uses “random” drawing to express the workings of the subconscious.

In this large-scale etching, elegant black lines curve and twist around blocks of red, yellow, blue and green. Miró uses carborundum to add a varied texture, producing an etching that is rich in color and form. Loose splashes of green and yellow are placed in the background. Bold, black lines from a wave-like formation throughout the paper. Encircled near the center of this large formation is a red circle which resembles the rising sun. It is clear Miró designed this etching to be freely interpreted.

The gestural lines within this composition form a visual code that is exclusive to Miró. In this way, his wondrous works always maintain the sense of mystery. The rich coloration of the etching as well as its substantial size allows this work to stand out in any room.

Created in 1973, this color Etching and Aquatint with Carborundum on Arches paper is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left. Published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris and printed by Morsang, Paris.
