Joan Miró, Le sourire aux ailes flamboyantes, 1954. Radiating playfulness and enchantment, this work encourages the viewer to explore the depths of his or her imagination. Miró's figures come to life, as curved lines, patches of brilliant color, and topsy-turvy stars dance throughout the composition. Miró balances shape and form to create a surreal environment in which space and time become distorted; the viewer cannot clearly discern day from night, for the frolicking figures are placed against a beautifully textured beige background that reveals no identifiable location or time. The figures and forms are captured in their old world, a world of carefree fantasy and fun.

Created in 1954, this color lithograph with hand-painted watercolor is hand-signed and dated by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin and signed in the stone in black in the lower right of the work. The piece is numbered 291/400 in pencil in the lower left margin and published by Maeght, Paris.
