Historical Description

Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) Le Lezard Aux Plumes d’Or, Pl. 9 (The Lizard with Golden Feathers, Plate 9), 1967 is one of 15 color lithographs which illustrate a poem of the same title by Miró. This work contains a playful, childlike energy that mimics the minimalistic aspects of poetry. The segregated forms in the work perform like stanzas, each contributing to the artwork’s entire composition. Miró is known to have a deep connection to poetry and has a unique view on how poetry and art are related; he once noted, “The painting rises from the brushstrokes as a poem rises from the words. The meaning comes later.” Though this work is printed from an image on a stone plate, the hand of the artist and his intuitive mark-making are quite visible in the image. The scene in the image is whimsical, innocent, and engages the viewer in a manner which compels them to ponder Miró’s intention behind the work.

Created in 1967, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right corner and marked "EA" for Artist Proof in the lower left corner.
