Historical Description

This vibrantly colored work is instilled with both childlike fancy and a sense of elderly wisdom. Entitled Joan Miró L'Aïeule des 10,000 Âges (The Grandmother of 10,000 Ages), the hunched stance of the central red and black figure implies a sense of age and maturity. This theme of age contrasts with the childlike touches to the image: the blue, yellow, and purple scribbles surrounding the central figure along with the tri-colored antennae-like forms to the right. In a fashion typical of Miró, the identity of the subject remains open to the viewer's interpretation yet appears as both a fun and slightly foreboding bug-like figure, with its legs reaching out towards the viewer, drawing the viewer in.

Created in 1976, this color lithograph is an artist's proof annotated H.C. (Hors d'Commerce or artist's proof) in pencil in the lower left (aside from the numbered edition of 65). This work is hand-signed in pencil by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in the lower right. This piece was published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris and printed by Arte Adrien Maeght, Paris.
