Historical Description

Comprised of jubilant spring colors, this enchanting work pays tribute to famed poet Arthur Rimbaud. Bright patches of red, green, yellow, blue, and purple-pink overlap and intermingle, relaying the impression that we have just walked into a lush, sunny field. The composition remains balanced amidst the somewhat free-flowing forms, while thin black lines dance throughout. Rimbaud was renowned for his inventive use of form and language, and his works greatly influenced the Surrealist movement. As such, Miró was a great admirer of his work. This exquisite piece perfectly encapsulates Rimbaud's free-spiritedness and tendency towards wanderlust, as colorful forms and black lines roam throughout the composition, guiding our gaze.

Created in 1962, this color lithograph is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right. Annotated 'Epreuve d'artiste' (artist's proof) in pencil in the lower left, this work is an artist's proof aside from the numbered edition of 97 and the edition of 7 lettered A-G. Printed by Mourlot, Paris, this lithograph was created for the portfolio Arthur Rimbaud Seen by Contemporary Painters, which contains 9 original prints by Arp, Braque, Cocteau, Ernst, Giacometti, Valentine Hugo, Picasso, Villon, and Miró.
