Historical Description

Joan Miró Fond Marin I (Seabed II), 1963 is a simple and intricate work of art that depicts a green circle layered on top of much finer black ink splatters. There is a sense of harmony incorporated by the lime green circle in the center with ashy black shades strewn across the paper. The surface is beautifully speckled in a way that creates tactility and sensation. By nature it is whimsical and light hearted. Encompassed by light and cheerful gestures, Miró creates a pleasing and jovial scene. Towards the bottom left corner there is a black bird-like figure floating daintily. Serene and elaborate details in the markings of the paint splatters emphasize an almost euphoric presence. Making the viewer feel like they are dancing in an open space, the intricate drawings form a kind of mystical space. The random symbols sprinkled across the paper attempt to express the inner workings of Miro’s psyche. Drawn from his ever undulating creative inner world, this work pulls us deeper into the depths of fantasy where the use of basic symbols and abstraction collide. Known for his works of automatism and whimsical styles, this wonderful work of art successfully exhibits Miro’s ability as a master artist to render such engaging works.
