Vibrant hues of red, green, yellow and blue intersect against bold black curves. This lively and commanding artwork is appropriately named since L’Ogre Enjoué translates to “The Playful Ogre”. Looking closer, the viewer can imagine the two black circles on each side as the ogre’s eyes, staring playfully back at its audience. In addition, jumbled black curves encircle the eyes to form the ogre’s endearingly misshapen head. Bringing abstract forms to life is Miró’s specialty. He prized artistic freedom above all and uses this philosophy to disrupt visual elements of traditional painting. This beastly portrait derived from the varied combination of lines and colors reminds viewers why Miró was an important influence to American Abstract Expressionists.

Created in 1969, this color etching and aquatint with carborundum on Arches paper was published by Maeght, Paris. Hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin, this work is numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left margin.
