Historical Description

Joan Miró La Traca I (Fireworks I), 1979 is a mesmerizing artwork that encapsulates the controlled chaos of a pyrotechnic display. Featuring a richly textured background of atmospheric smoky grey, this work welcomes tonal variation in this surreal environment. This distinctive texture is made possible through Miro's masterful and experimental use of aquatint, a technique of etching that is used to create large tonal areas instead of lines. Aquatint is traditionally used to create even tone, but Miró who was fascinated by the etching process, has found a way to create a surface full of subtle changes in value. White lines weave with spontaneity and flow through the haze of grey, revealing tunnels for bursts of vibrant color. Irregular geometric shapes align in these pathways, alternating in color from red, green, blue, with single form of yellow disrupting the rhythmic order. Presenting the explosive energy of a fireworks spectacle, La Traca I (Fireworks I), 1979 parallels Miro's artistic process, spirit, and style.

Created in 1979, this color etching and aquatint is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 30 in pencil in the lower left. There were also 15 not for sale copies signed and numbered I/XV to XV/XV.  Published by Maeght, Barcelona and printed by Joan Marbarà, Barcelona.
