Historical Description

Joan Miró Barcelona, 1972-1973 is a delicate print that exemplifies the artist's exploration of the relationship between color and form. One of 13 works in the 'Barcelona' series, this print has beautiful balance and effortless elegance. Depicting a bold and colorful image with a variety of textural qualities, this work captures the viewer's attention through the use of vibrant saturated hues in strong contrast with black and white. Luminous orbs of color drift amidst a predominately white, textured background. This textured background, created through the use of carborundum, appears as if splotches of colorless paint were dripped across the paper, adding surface depth to the work. The circles of color, dark at the centers and lightening towards the borders, add a sense of movement to the work and appear to flicker, as if they were blinking lights.

Created in 1972-1973, Joan Miró Barcelona, 1972-1973 is a color etching, aquatint, and carborundum on Guarro paper. Hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right, this work is numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left. This work was printed by J. J. Torralba, Barcelona and published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona. This work is from a series of 13 engravings in etching, aquatint and carborundum gathered together in a portfolio.
