Historical Description

Vivid and textural, loose brushstrokes of red yellow and black are drizzled and splattered artfully across the page. Far from plain abstraction, the forms intersect to create mesmerizing shapes and patterns. Using a minimal amount of color, Miro manages to create a dramatic and dazzling work. Of his color use, he has said “I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music”. Truly, spontaneous workings of color in this work allow us to imagine a moving musical composition or a rousing poem.

Created in 1963, this color aquatint on BFK Rives paper is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin, printed by Maeght, Levallois-Perret and published by Maeght Editeur..
