Created near the end of Matisse’s career, this lovely print encapsulates the modern poetry for which his work is known. Showing a world that could be, not a world that is, Matisse portrays an interior scene illuminated by a wash of blue. The window, a familiar feature in his oeuvre, opens onto a verdant landscape. The viewer can imagine the waters of the Mediterranean glinting in the distance. This dreamscape, anchored by a faceless figure seated behind an exuberant houseplant, boils everyday life down to its most basic elements: a chair, a table, a window and curtains. Small Blue Interior is a mature poem to beauty, to be enjoyed by all lovers of modern art.

Created in 1952, this color aquatint on Arches paper is hand signed by Henri Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, 1869 – Nice, 1954) in pencil in the lower right margin. Inscribed ‘H.C.’ (Hors de Commerce) in pencil in the lower left margin; aside from the numbered edition of 200.
