Historical Description

Four profiles are detailed on Henri Toulouse-Lautrec Croquis, 1898, translating to ‘sketch’. A man in a top hat dominates the upper left corner, with detailed crosshatching to create depth on his hat.  Below him is a faint profile of a man who is defined by his goatee, which points out from his chin. Dominating the center of the etching is the largest profile of a weary looking man, whose face is deeply lined and his mouth gently opened in a sigh. The only recognizable portrait is that of the wrestler Ville in the lower right. Interestingly, Toulouse-Lautrec has drawn his full naked body, as he runs off the side of the etching. Many of his features are exaggerated, including his nose and genitals, and he smirks. Toulouse-Lautrec shows his uncanny ability to portray personality and emotions through delicately drawn, line-based portraits.

Created in 1898, this drypoint etching on zinc on Japan paper is stamped with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s (Albi, 1864 – Château Malrôme, 1901) monogram ‘TL’ in red in the lower right margin. From the edition of around 25 known impressions, 15 of which are numbered. Published by Manzi, Joyant, & Cie, Paris in 1911.
