Historical Description

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Charles Maurin, 1989 portrays the artist Charles Maurin in profile. Maurin looks very serious, and though he is not facing us straight on, he peers out of the corner of his eyes. His brow is furrowed, adding to his already somber appearance. Toulouse-Lautrec etches with scathing marks that darken the page. Maurin’s hair is lightly tussled, but he looks distinguished with a full beard and mustache. Toulouse-Lautrec darkens the upper neck and shoulders of Maurin’s outfit, but leaves the remainder st of his torso to fade off into the rest of the paper. With a myriad of linear detailing and precise shading work, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec creates a discernible persona of Charles Maurin, who emerges through the etching and feels real upon the paper.

Created in 1898, this drypoint etching on zinc on Japan paper is stamped with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s (Albi, 1864 – Château Malrôme, 1901) monogram ‘TL’ in red in the lower right margin. From the edition of around 25 known impressions, 15 of which are numbered. Published by Manzi, Joyant, & Cie, Paris in 1911.
