Displaying the artist's use of surrealist imagery and classical motifs, this original work depicts a bionic troubadour posed for battle. De Chirico utilizes strong architectural elements, as if this android-like figure was constructed much like a machine. Triangular forms are scattered throughout the figure's garment but also serve as supporting elements, as exemplified by the triangular support near the figure's right leg. This Il Trovatore remains faceless, denying the subject a true identity and adding a sense of intrigue and mystery to the work. Furthermore, the brilliant gold patina of this piece adds a reflective quality to the work, illuminating the subject when placed in the proper light while allowing the viewer to see his or her own reflection, as if the viewer were placed in the position of the troubadour's opponent. The stance of the Il Trovatore subtly resembles that of the Italian contrapposto as he rests most of his weight on his left foot, slightly lifting his right, suggesting that he is both brave and strong and instilling him with a superhero-like quality.

Created c. 1968, this original bronze sculpture with gold patina is inscribed 'g. de Chirico' on right side of the base with the numbered inscription '87/250' on the back side of the base. This work was published by Artcurial and inscribed 'ARTCURIAL' with the title 'Il Trovatore' on the back of the side of the base.
