Historical Description

Displaying the artist's use of classical motifs, this beautifully colored etching with aquatint is a remarkable example of de Chirico's artistic genius. De Chirico utilizes gentle, oscillating lines and exquisite pastel hues to convey a beautiful, seated nude bather. His remarkable ability to softly blend colors while still conveying the unique nature of each stroke relays a sense of texture, as if the viewer can imagine the softness of this woman's skin. De Chirico's use of white is particularly noteworthy, for it adds a reflective quality to the work and captures the illusion that light is bouncing off of the subject's skin. This predominate use of white also highlights the soft hues of pink and blue within the piece, allowing these colors to stand out to the viewer. De Chirico depicts this woman in a quiet moment of contemplation, for she appears pensive as she rests her head in her hands. The viewer feels as though he or she is witnessing a private instance of reflection as this lovely woman prepares her bath.

Created in 1931, this original color etching with aquatint is printed on Chiné Colle with Imperial Japan paper for backing and annotated 'epreuve d'artist' in pencil in the lower left margin (an artist's proof aside from the edition of 100). This piece is hand-signed by Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) in pencil in the lower right margin.
