Historical Description

Engaging in the boundaries of the medium, Braque uses expressive strokes of line and sweeping motions of curves which serve to emulate the wings of the bird in flight. The delicate strokes on the soft paper give off the illusion of the work being a watercolor which adds to the ethereal quality of the work.

Paroles Peintes is a series of poems and stories written by different authors with accompanying illustrations by artists that include Braque, Chagall, Bissiere, and Ernst. This beautifully delicate portrayal of birds by Braque accompanied the text by Jean Paulhan in Paroles Peintes I, one of Braque's closest friends and a French literature icon.

Created in 1962, this color aquatint is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin. Created to accompany text by Jean Paulhan in Paroles Peinties I. Published by O. Lazar-Vernet Paris, 1962, and printed by Visat, Paris.
